Super Seed #3: Interrogating Heterogeneous Materials with Nanoscale Quantum Sensors

In this Super Seed, the PIs aim to develop NV centers as a probe of 2D materials that have been shown to have ambiguous bulk characteristics, synthesized by current PIs in the MRSEC. NV centers are highly versatile, allowing for a large temperature and magnetic field range. Furthermore, they are qubits that can be initialized and coherently controlled, making them amenable to Hamiltonian engineering and opening a large range of sensing modalities to understand a particular material system. This project will enable new advances in device integration with NV centers and theoretical work on directly connecting condensed matter phenomena to measurable signals with particular sensing protocols. They anticipate that developing this toolkit and suite of techniques for a few specific target materials will allow them to widely deploy NV quantum sensors to study many materials with relevance to PCCM.
